Minggu Keempat

On Monday we learned the days of the week, months and how to tell time. We also learned a list of adjectives to describe our view of hobbies and subjects at school. This enabled us to frame a basic timetable and more or less discuss aspects of our university life. Bu Indra also explained the two assignments. The first "Tentang Saya" ("Self-Profile") is due in week 7. I have already begun to develop it an ongoing project on this blog. In other words, I keep reposting it, as I continually revise it with the new vocabulary we are learning. The second is due only on May 28th. It is a short performance as a group presentation, where we role-play an Indonesian family welcoming an Australian. We were given several homework sheets for the week following the Easter break, when Bu Indra will be away on Monday. We were also given preparation material for Wednesday's quiz.

On Wednesday we did the following:
1) Reviewed days of the week, date formation and telling time
2) Took the quiz
3) Had a discussion in Indonesian with two exchange students
4) Watched a video describing a typical Indonesian school day and answered written questions
5) Formed groups for our group project. I will be working with Tamsyn Butler, Christine Mueller and Bree Swift.
In the Lab period we had to interview the student next to us and describe his/her timetable in an email of minumum ten sentences sent to Bu Indra. I interviewed Sean Stanley, who actually lives just up the road in Araluen! I am going to be in touch with him about car-pooling. Here is the result of that assignment:

Nama saya Moshe Bernstein. Saya belajar di Universitas Curtin di kota Perth. Saya sekarang belajar empat kuliah pada semester satu: Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Cina, Studi Budaya Asia dan Studi Budaya Indonesia. Semua kuliah saya menarik sekali dan saya suka belajar bahasa. Kelas saya pada hari Rabu tanggal sembilan belas Maret Bahasa Indonesia dari jam dua sampai jam empat. Dari jam empat sampai jam lima kami belajar bahasa ini di Lab. Kami juga main komputer di bahasa Indonesia.

Nama teman saya Sean Stanley. Dia tinggal di daerah Roleystone (saya juga tinggal di sana). Dia juga belajar empat kuliah: Bahasa Indonesia, Studi Budaya Asia dan Studi Budaya Indonesia (sama dengan saya). Wawancara ini pada hari Rabu sama saya. Dia juga belajar bahasa Indonesia dari jam dua sumpai jam empat dan Lab dari jam empat sampai jam lima. Kelas bahasa Indonesia dua jam dan Lab satu jam. Kelas ini menarik sekali untk Sean, dan dia suka sekali kuliah ini. Dulu dia belajar juga bahasa Jepang, tapi kuliah itu cukup sulit untuk dia. Sekarang dia tidak belajar kuliah itu hanya tiga kuliah. Kelas dia pada hari Senin Bahasa Indonesia dari jam satu sampai jam tiga. Pada hari Selasa dia kuliah Studi Budaya Asia dari jam satu sampai jam tiga. Hari Kamis dia tidak pergi ke kampus. Hari Jumat dia juga belajar Studi Budaya Indonesia dari jam sepuluh sampai jam satu dan Studi Budaya Asia dari jam satu sampai jam dua. Hobi dia naik motor, main congklak dan tidur.

Tentang Saya!





















Nama saya Moshe Bernstein. Saya berasal dari Amerika. Dulu saya tinggal di Belanda, Maroko dan Israel, tapi saya sudah pindah ke Australia sejak 1993. Umur saya lima puluh lima tahun dan hari Ulang Tahun saya pada tanggal enam belas Agustus. Tinggi saya seratus tujuh puluh dua sentimeter dan berat saya tujuh puluh enam kilogram. Warna rambut saya coklat dan abu-abu, dan warna mata saya juga coklat. Saya punya janggut yang warnanya juga coklat dan abu-abu. Saya suka sekali berjalan-jalan dan hobi saya belajar bahasa. Saya dapat bicara bahasa Inggeris, bahasa Jérman, bahasa Perancis, bahasa Belanda, bahasa Yahudi dan sedikit bahasa Arab. Saya sekarang belajar bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Cina di Universitas Curtin di sini di kota Perth.
Saya suka sekali membaca buku. Filosofi dan Agama adalah hobi saya. Dulu saya sudah bekerjan sebagai pendéta Yahudi di sekolah menengah atas Yahudi di Sydney dan nanti di Perth. Saya juga suka sekali mendengarkan musik (Beck dan Daft Punk favorit saya) dan berdansa, tapi isteri saya tidak mau berdansa dengan saya karena dia pikir kami terlalu tua. Isteri saya namanya Batsheva. Dia cantik dan baik-hati sekali. Dia berasal dari Jérman dan dia juga tahu bicara banyak bahasa. Dia sudah belajar seni rupa di universitas, dan dia sekarang seniwati; dia pandai mengambil potrét. Anak laki-laki kami tinggal di sini di Perth. Namanya Eli dan dia berumur dua puluh delapan tahun. Dua cucu kami, satu laki-laki dan satu perempuan, juga tinggal di sini. Anak perempuan kami tidak tinggal di sini. Dia, suaminya dan dua anak laki-laki dia tinggal di London. Namanya Sara dan umurnya tiga puluh tiga tahun. Dua anak kami sudah belajar Ilmu Èkonomi. Kami suka bertemu dengan keluarga semua untuk hari besar Yahudi. Anak perempuan saya suka memasak, dan dia memasak makanan énak sekali! Sekarang saya tinggal dengan isteri saya di daerah Roleystone. Saya naik mobil ke kampus selama empat puluh menit. Mobil saya cukup kecil tapi menyenangkan sekali. Hari Senin dari jam satu siang sampai jam tiga saya belajar Bahasa Indonesia. Kuliah ini menyenangkan sekali, dan saya suka sekali bicara bahasa ini. Dari jam tiga sampai jam lima saya belajar Bahasa Cina. Kuliah ini cukup sulit, tapi saya juga suka belajar bahasa ini. Hari Senin pada jam lima saya naik mobil ke rumah. Isteri saya memasak makan malam. Kami makan malam jam setengah delapan. Hari Selasa saya pergi ke kampus dan belajar Studi Asia dari jam satu sampai jam tiga. Kuliah ini menarik sekali. Hari Jumat saya belajar Studi Indonesia dari jam sembilan sampai jam dua belas siang. Juga kuliah ini menyenangkan sekali.
Malam hari saya tidur pada jam sebelas, tapi saya bangun pada jam enam dan belajar Bahasa Indonesia. Pagi hari saya juga latihan membaca Bahasa Cina. Sifat saya selalu mau tahu!

Minggu Ketiga

We were handed out sheets to study the colours, pronouns (particularly the use of the personal possessive in Indonesian, where the pronoun follows the noun), a considerable list of verbs to describe the various hobbies among the class members, a few new names of familial relationships and, finally, a list of adjectives used to describe personality traits. We also did translation exercises and partner dialogues utiilising new vocabulary. I have now started a blog online to record this aspect of our journal, the reflections on the lessons in English. Although this is meant to be on a bi-weekly basis, I find it helpful to jot down my notes directly after each lesson. I will also add some sections in Indonesian to the online feature as my communication skills improve.

Today Bu Indra explained the criteria for our marks on the journal, which, as previously mentioned, consists of four sections. This online blog constitutes the fourth, though it is interspersed with independent work in Indonesian. Afterwards, we practiced with a series of review worksheets in preparation for next week's quiz. We practiced a series of dialogues with our partner and then a group conversation discussing places of origin and hobbies. We then watched a video with the song:

"Satu, satu, aku sayang ibu
dua, dua juga sayang ayah
tiga, tiga sayang adik kakak
satu, dua, tiga sayang semuanya."

We then regrouped and rewrote the song substituting the names of family members and finally each group singing its rendition to the class. In the lab period we did unit one of the University of Victoria canada's online website. This was followed by another link and then a video relating to the ACICIS (In-Country Study program in Indonesia). This program has a structured aspect in Yogyakarta connected to the university there, as well as a more independent research program in Eastern Java.

Keluarga Saya

We finished unit 1 including place names of Indonesian islands along different country names and nationalities. We reviewed the alphabet with spelling drills and proceeded to discuss names for various family members. Afterwards, we were given a worksheet with numbers from 1 -100. The textbook, which at first glance seems childlike, is actually excellent in the progressive development of language skills and vocabulary. The more I am able to communicate, the more I experience the poetic melody inherent in the language.

We practiced informational questions regarding name, age, height, place of origin, former and current residences. We reviewed numbers from 1-100 playing bingo. Bu Indra called out the numbers very quickly. I won the first round, but as I don't eat lollies, I gave my winnings to my study partner, Angela (牠也会说中国话). We also learned the words for simple addition addition and substraction, then watched a video of an Indonesian comedy troupe singing, "Satu ditambah satu sama dengan dua..." We translated the unit 1 dialogue into English. In the Lab period we went through 10 units on a great website from the State of Victoria's Department of Education. (See Links.)

Minggu Kesatu

This week we had an introduction to Indonesian language and culture given by Pak (Dr.) Ian Chalmers. Afterwards, Ibu Indrawati Zifirdaus explained the Course Outline. There is an expectation that self-motivated students will study at least one-half hour daily. We are also required to keep a with 1) classwork, translations, grammar exercises and independent work; 2) relevant textual resources on language and grammar from external sources; 3) clippings from newspapers and journals on aspects of Indonesia discussed in class; and finally, 4) a journal in English of bi-weekly reflections on our course progress. We also discussed the in-country Indonesian studies that Curtin offers in Yogyakarta, which sounds like a truly enriching experience.

Alex, a student who has just returned from Jogja, spoke to us about his experiences there. He was very enthusiastic, and it seems the Indonesian people are keen on relating to foreigners, particularly those who can speak the language. After his talk we began unit 1, but, as not all students had books, we were given handouts teaching basic greetings and place names from the Indonesian archipelago. Afterwards, in the Lab class we watched a video on Yogyakarta, followed by a worksheet and class discussion.
